Save Your Soles ;)

Whether you are a girl who loves her flats or one who can ONLY be seen in her high stilettos, a nice pair of shoes can always complement any outfit.  Some girls wish for a closet full of shoes while others are more practical and satisfied with just owning a few.

For me personally, when I invest in a pair of shoes, they must reflect my style and personality in order to ensure I will get the most wear/value out of them.  Throughout the years I have learned never to buy a pair of shoes (or any clothing item for that matter) just for the sake of buying them.  If I “kinda” like a pair of shoes I know it is wise just to walk away, as they will likely be a wasted purchase that I will probably end up donating or giving away.

However, when I do LOVE a pair, I am not kidding when I say I will literally wear them out until their “death."

Luckily I found a product that extends the life of your shoes, which means you can wait a little longer to say farewell to those favourite kicks.

Product Description:  Sof Sole's Sure Step helps prevent slipping on most surfaces while extending the life of the sole. Fits all sizes of shoes and improves traction for all shoe types.
Product Website: http://www.sofsole.com/shoecare/surestep
Price: $2.99 (two pairs are included)
Available At: Winners

This product is very simple to use and I have included step by step instructions below:
My latest purchase from the Zara Spring/Summer 2013 collection.

Ensure that your soles are clean and dry before you use the product.

Each Sure Step product comes with two pairs.

The grips come in a standard black colour.

Peel off the adhesive backing.  Be careful as the grips are fairly sticky.

Press the grips firmly in position.

Remove trapped air bubbles by rubbing front to back.

And viola you are done!

For best adhesion, allow 24 hours to set before using your shoes.

READY, SET, SPRING!

And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love felt everywhere;
And each flower and herb on Earth's dark breast
rose from the dreams of its wintry rest.

Abstract Art

When I told my close friend that my next blog post would revolve around my abstract art inspired dress her reply was “Abstract art?  You mean when someone just gets a brush and strokes a few colours here and there without any real meaning?”

Well, needless to say abstract art is not everyone’s cup of tea!  Before I go any further I want to provide you with the definition of what abstract art is so that you have a better understanding of its meaning and purpose from an artists perspective:

Abstract Art is art that does not attempt to represent external, recognizable reality but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.

As the famous saying goes “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. I think the same concept can be applied to the observation of any form of abstract art.  In my case, I like the idea of being drawn to and lost in a particular painting that in some strange way offers me peace and calmness.

One of my first major art investment purchases was this abstract canvas painting from a local art boutique (picture below).  I wake up to this painting every morning and it’s something I never get tired of starring at.

“In the process of making a painting in an abstract way, the painter is in search of a reality. Not one of realistic objects, but of the complete end result. The painting is experienced as a whole, and must evoke in the painter the absolute conviction that this is how it should be and no other way.” - Paul Burlin

Silk Abstract Dress: Le Chateau

Jewel Cuff Bracelet: Winners
Pony Leather Shoes: Joe Fresh Runway Collection 2012
Nude Lipstick: LA Girl in the colour Forbidden Love

Those who have ever gone shopping with me know that when I walk into any clothing store/boutique I literally scan the shop within minutes and gravitate towards items that speak to me.  I have often had friends and family that know my taste and style say “that is such a Gagan dress!”

When I saw this abstract print inspired silk dress and tried it on I literally felt like I was walking around wearing a piece of beautiful art.

With a statement dress like this you obviously need to pair it with statement jewellery pieces that are classy but not over the top since the dress is really the focal point of the outfit.  For this look I went with gold jewellery pieces and for the shoes I chose these AMAZING brown pony leather shoes from the Joe Fresh Runway collection.

Style Tip:  Personally I love the look of loose flowly dresses like the one I am wearing here. But if you are planning to go out and take pictures I recommend ALWAYS accessorizing it with a belt.  The reason being adding a belt cinches your waste line and accentuates your curves, without it you may look like you are lost in the dress and appear wider than you actually are.

My Birthday Outfit: Feathers And Lace ❤

"I am a free spirit either admire me from the ground of fly with me, but don’t ever try to cage me." -  Anonymous

Hello Fashionista's!

I wanted to do a special blogpost to share the outfit I wore on my birthday this past weekend.  I am in LOVE with feathers and was searching for the perfect dress that incorporates feathers in a classy (not tacky) way.

When I saw this lace and feather dress featured on ASOS I fell instantly in love with it (ok well maybe just a little obsessed!).

ASOS Feather Dress: This evening dress is made by the ASOS Collection. The details include: a sheer lace top with long sleeves, fitted satin bodice, high waist, full, feathered skirt with an iridescent finish, and a buttoned keyhole with concealed zip fastening to the reverse.

ABOUT THE ASOS COLLECTION:  Directional, exciting and diverse, the ASOS Collection makes and breaks the fashion rules. Scouring the globe for inspiration, the London based Design Team is inspired by fashion’s most covetable trends; providing you with a cutting edge wardrobe season upon season.

For jewellery I kept it trendy and chic and went with this 18-karat gold plated triangle ring that was gifted to me by an amazing Canadian Designer, Gloria Lee, from her fashion label Tissh.

I had the privilege of modelling for Gloria's Fashion Show the same day as my birthday party. A blogpost on that event will be posted soon!

How COOL is this?!?!

Kourtney Kardashian joined Scott Disick as he celebrated his birthday in Las Vegas this past May 2013, and wore the SAME feather dress I rocked for my own birthday back in February 2013!

Birthday Hair & Make-up - LeSonne Bridals

I was lucky enough to be glammed up by one of my very close and extremely talented friends - Ruchika Verma, Owner of Lesonne Bridals based out of Toronto.

Ruchika has this natural ability to take the vision of what you want to look like and make it into reality. She ALWAYS makes me feel so glamorous and confident each and every time I walk out of her salon.

For my birthday look I wanted to keep my make-up neutral and chic and for my hair I went with big loose flowy curls.  You might have noticed from my previous blog posts the longer and bigger my hair is the happier I am!

Boho Chic Headbands

Do you want an effortless way to get a flirty feel to your beautiful locks?  Why not add a boho headband and achieve that sexy and uber romantic look?

Whether you have a casual dinner date or a special occasion adding this look will undoubtedly give your outfit an alluring, almost fairytale, feel.

This simple do it yourself hairstyle is certainly worth trying as it is a look anyone can pull off.  Not only does it scream “boho chic” but it can be completed in just a few minutes.

Tips for Achieving That Effortless Boho Chic Hairstyle

1)    Choosing a Headband Style:
Select a headband that not only suits your personal style but one that also compliments the outfit that you are pairing it with.  Go with a simple headband if your outfit is busy as there is already enough going on your overall look or opt for a more embellished option if your ensemble is more simple and chic.

Remember this look works well with your favourite blue jeans and a loose flowy top or a nice maxi style gown.  That is why I find this particular hair style so versatile because no matter the wardrobe selection you choose it seems to virtually work with everything.

2)    Hair Texture/Length:
There are no rules when it comes to the hair texture and length you decide to go with when styling your boho headband.  Again it all depends on your mood and the overall look you are trying to achieve.  Whether you have long curly hair or a short straight bob it ALL works.

As long as you pull off the hairstyle like you OWN it, it will look amazing on you. Believe me when I tell you that you will inspire those around you to give it a try as well.

3)    Headband Placement:
You can choose to wear the headband just below your hairline or a few inches below it.  I personally prefer to place it just below my hairline.  I feel it just falls more naturally and prevents me from having pieces of my hair fall out of place and stops the headband from shifting side to side.

I also recommend using a few bobbi pins at the back of your hair to further secure the headband.

If your headband feels too snug or tight I recommend trying to stretch it out BEFORE you wear it, as the last thing you want is a headache at the end of the night because your headband was too tight.

Boho Chic Definition: Boho-chic is a style of female fashion drawing on various bohemian and hippie influences, which, at its height in 2004 – 2005, was associated particularly with actress Sienna Miller and model Kate Moss in the United Kingdom and (as "bobo" chic) actresses Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and Nicole Richie in the United States.

I purchased my studded boho headband from Forever 21 and it was only $1.95 (super cheap)!

Do Everything Regret Nothing

In Memory of Julie

I wanted to dedicate this post to my close friend and amazing work colleague Julie.  Sadly, Julie suddenly passed away this past November.  It may sound cliché, but Julie was one of those people that sincerely cared about everyone around her and was always there when you needed her.

She always encouraged me to follow my dreams and to not worry about the little things, because in the end it would eventually all work out.  I have learned through Julie’s passing that life is too short and you have to reach for what you believe in and what feels right in your heart.
This post is intended to help inspire individuals (yes that means YOU!) to pursue their dreams the way Julie encouraged me to follow mine.
We all have goals and ambitions we want to achieve, but it may be daunting or a little scary because you don’t know where to begin.  I’ve included some tips below that I hope will give you that initial kick-start, so that you too, can follow your dreams:

1) Let Go of Your Fears

I cheated on my fears, broke up with my doubts, got engaged to my faith and now I'm marrying my dreams.”- Unknown

“What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail? - Unknown
Many times the main reason we hold back from pursuing our dreams is the fear that we will fail or that we won’t have the support we think we need.  The truth of the matter is you need to let go of your fears and realize nothing comes easily in life.  Yes you will most likely face obstacles, but know that these obstacles are just part of the journey.  If you believe in yourself and what you think you are able to accomplish then it WILL happen.  It’s that passion and drive that will keep you motivated to achieve your goals.
I’m going to be honest with you guys, I too have had many fears when it comes to things I’ve wanted to do in my life. For instance, I have wanted to do this fashion blog for a few years now, but part of me was SUPER nervous to get it started.
I knew I had a lot of great fashion tips and advice to share with the world, but was unsure whether people would actually read about what I had to say?  And what about those “haters” that would only have negative comments about my posts?  Would I be able to handle it?
Well needless to say I am SO happy I conquered my fears and finally started this page.  I am grateful to say with just 5 posts thus far, I have reached over 3,500 hits on the blog (YAYY!)!

2) Set a Task List/Create A Vision Board

"I am a goal setter and I set more goals everyday. I keep lists of goals in my office to stay on track." - Kiana Tom
Ok so now that you’re ready to get the ball rolling - where do you start?  I recommend developing a task list of the next steps you will have to do to take your goal(s)/ambition(s) from fantasy to reality.

Whether it’s setting up an appointment with your bank to get a loan to start up your own business, or setting up a consultation with your local University/Collage to learn about a career you wish to pursue, YOU are the only one that can make it happen!
I’m a visual person so I love creating a vision board as it inspires me and keeps me focused and motivated.  What is a vision board you ask?  I have included a definition of it below:
Definition:  A vision board is simply a visual representation or collage of the things that you want to have, be, or do in your life. It consists of a poster or foam board with cut-out pictures, drawings and/or writing on it of the things that you want in your life or the things that you want to become. The purpose of a vision board is to activate the law of attraction to begin to pull things from your external environment that will enable you to realize your dream. By selecting pictures and writing that charges your emotions with feelings of passion, you will begin to manifest those things into your life. - Tristan Loo

3) Network! Network! Network!

“I like to define networking as cultivating mutually beneficial, give-and-take, win-win relationships… The end result may be to develop a large and diverse group of people who will gladly and continually refer a lot of business to us, while we do the same for them.” – Bob Burg
“If you want to go somewhere, it is best to find someone who has already been there.                     - Robert Kiyosaki

If I could give anyone one piece of advice it would be to embrace the power of networking.  Making connections with the right individuals can open doors and take you down a path you otherwise may not have been exposed to.
Personally there are many opportunities I know I would not have been presented with if I hadn’t networked.  For example, Facebook has enabled me to connect with talented individuals within the Fashion industry.  I have never been shy to send someone a private message to throw out an idea I may have or suggest collaborating with someone on a particular project.  What’s the worst thing they could say…..no?
However, I would remind you to be cautious with those who cross your path.  Always do your research to determine if the individual(s) you are connecting with are who they claim to be.  In this day and age you hear many horror stories of people who wholeheartedly put their trust in individuals and ended up disappointed to discover they are just a big sham.

4) Surround Yourself with Positive People and        Ignore the Haters

“If you’re absent during my struggle, don’t expect to be present during my success.” - Will Smith
Surrounding yourself with positive people is very important in my eyes.  These are the people who will push you to your limits to ensure you achieve your full potential.  It’s in those moments when you may be feeling a little lost and insecure that these people are there to boost your confidence and ensure you that you are heading in the right direction.  They are the ones who will be by your side through your highs AND your lows.
I have been very blessed to be surrounded by friends and family who will go out of their way to help me achieve all of my fashion goals, for example there is:
  • My friend Arianna who will make time out of her busy University life make a trip down from Toronto to take pictures for my blog;
  • My friend Sheena who will text me late at night telling me I better stay on track on my blog posts (or else);
  • My friend Shaesta who kindly volunteered to be my fashion editor and double checks all of my blog posts (god knows I need it!);
  • My friend Taj who shares EVERY single one of my blog posts on her Facebook wall;
  • My cousin Ruby who pushed me to finally conquer my fear of walking the runway (I’m terrified that I may trip on the catwalk) and model for an amazing Canadian designer (which I will be doing next month – eeeek!); and,
  • My brother Amrinder who is always there to give me advice and suggestions on all of my fashion endeavours I wish to pursue.
These are just a few examples of why it is so important to be surrounded by that positive energy and encouragement.
Hating is an emotional disease.  So for those who hate, I hope you “get well” soon!”                      - Unknown

They say you’ve reached success when you have haters.  I don’t know if this is something anyone actually enjoys experiencing.  Personally, I never really understood why someone would want to hate on someone else who is trying to accomplish their goals.  I often wonder why they wouldn’t redirect that wasted energy to focus on themselves and what they want to achieve?
I really don’t want to spend too much time on this section because in all honestly I don’t think anyone who spits out negative vibes deserves anyone’s attention.
My only advice is to ignore those who don’t wish you well.  Turn their negativity into something positive that just further motivates you to achieve your goals.

5) Always Stay Humble

When I see talent and when I see a good person who comes with the talent, I melt.”               -  Alber Elbaz Designer for Lanvin
I find that there is nothing more unattractive then someone who brags and flaunts when they have reached a certain level of success, and puts down others who are aiming to achieve their own.  Most of the time, the harder these people rise the quicker they eventually fall.

Humility to me is very important because it always keeps you grounded and makes you grateful for all the blessing you have in your life.  My advice to those who have achieved where they want to be in life is to try to share your experiences, knowledge and expertise with others.  What better feeling is there than assisting someone in reaching their own goals and dreams?

6) Be Thankful (The Thank You Jar)

Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough. - Oprah Winfrey
Sometimes we are so busy in life that we don’t take a step back and actually process all of the things we are thankful for.
I saw this Do It Yourself (DIY) post on Pinterest called “The Thank You Jar” and I thought - what an amazing idea!
The Concept:  Take an empty jar and label it as your “Thank You Jar”. Throughout the year if there is something you are thankful for (no matter how big or how small) write it down on a piece of paper/card and place it in your jar.  Then at the end of the year you can open the jar and reflect back on all the things/experiences you were blessed with.
